Subject: Re: a former lab member is relocating to Portland
Dear David,
I hope everything is going well and the mice are cooperating. I'm actually writing now because a former technician of mine, Shelly Bambina, is relocating to Portland and is looking for a similar lab position. I don't know if you're looking or know of anyone who might be - but Shelly is exceptional and has the training labs like ours needs.
Shelly was a tech with me for the better part of a year (2006-2007) having started as a summer intern and finishing as a lab tech on payroll. She really impressed me with how smart she was, how much practicality and common sense went with that, and how quickly she learned new techniques and was able to troubleshoot. An example is that I took her through the analysis of lymphocytes from mice by flow cytometry from start to finish (harvesting organs, preparing the cells, staining, and the flow itself, including set up) once, and she was able to do it on her own and perfectly the next time. Since she left (I didn't want her to go, her spouse's job had relocated to Philadephia) she has been a senior tech at the lab of a close friend and colleague of mine, Sara Cherry, at UPenn. In fact, when she told me she was leaving, I resignedly but happily let a couple of friends at Penn know, who then tried to out-compete each other to hire her!
Shelly has contributed to several important publications in the Cherry lab and had basically run their fly operation. Even if there's no position immediately available at OHSU, I think she is someone to keep in mind and worth meeting. I've attached her CV.

Best Regards,
Chris
